This locomotive was part of a pre production run of around 12 sets and is believed to have been run at industry toy shows around the country and most likely also on the Hall of Science layout in New York. Richard Trotter, who produces the Hall of Science West Channel on Youtube, found this locomotive in a train store in Norman, Oklahoma. The owner was from the Chicago area and was selling the set containing this locomotive and other sets he had as a boy. Richard wasn't able to purchase it at the time but passed the word along to his uncle, Ray Mohrlang, a well known American Flyer Collector, who jumped at the opportunity to add it to his collection. Upon Ray's death a few years ago, it was sold to provide needed funds for his widow. It is interesting to note that the set containing this locomotive had a mix of aluminum and plastic passenger cars, indicative of the mixing and matching that went on during this time of change when the old aluminum cars were being phased out and Gilbert was preparing to introduce his new knuckle couplers.
