This cover photo from the Dell edition of Marshall McClintock's How to Build and Operate a Model Railroad shows the area just to the right of the three level crossing.  The train on the overpass is crossing over the lower tracks which lead from the industrial area on the right and will soon be traveling on the raised concrete wall that circles the industrial area.  Within the first few feet of the wall is another frequently duplicated feature, the elevated station platform at an overpass.
